Book Craving: A La Cart

I'd never heard of Hillary Carlip until yesterday when I was perusing The Book Pirate's blog. He did a review of Carlip's second book, A la Cart: The Secret Lives of Grocery Shoppers, and now I'm obsessed with finding a copy of this for my future coffee table.

A la Cart is essentially Carlip's interpretation of discarded grocery lists she's been collecting for years. Based on what the people were planning to buy she guess who they were and what their lives were like. Not only does she describe these people, but she dresses up as them as she goes to the store to buy their items. On the front cover are just three of the photos of her at the grocery store. If the rest are this good, I can't wait to see the whole book. For more info on this book, check out the review on The Book Pirate.

Also, in case you missed it, I'm having my second giveaway. If you click here and leave a comment by June 15 you'll be entered to win a free signed copy of The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women.

Hm? Oh what? You linked to me an I failed to notice. Nifty blog you have here. Did you ever find a copy of A La Cart? And I see you secretly like travel essays. Have you by chance read Tony Hawks (not the skateboarder) or J. Maarten Troost? They are two of my favorite travel writers.

Hi Colin! Nope, haven't gotten a copy of the book yet. I'm going to get one eventually though.

And thanks for the tips on travel writers. I haven't read anything by either of them so I'm super excited.

I read about this book and tried to put it on my library list, where I get most of my books, but it's not in their system. I usually only buy my favorite authors, but I might have to make an exception here. I'm a grocery store junkie, so I'm completely entranced by the premise.

Jill: I'm not a big fan of buying books either. I check out about 20 books at a time (I never get to them all) from the library and could never justify spending the money it would cost me to actually buy them. I sometimes will splurge though if it's something my library doesn't carry, or if it's something I think I'll use frequently (usually this only includes reference books, but I think I'm going to make an exception for coffee table books too. Heh.).

Jill, Becca. I wish I had your self-control. I walk into a bookstore and end up with new books every time.

Oddly, I don't have a library cards.

Colin: It's not a matter of self-control. It's a matter of not walking into bookstores. If I were to enter a bookstore I'd promptly have a book stack tall enough to cover my face. The proof is in the fact that I have 12 books on hold at the library right now and already have 11 checked out.

P.S. You should get a library card! It will save you tons of money and save some trees!
